Lake Biwa Pleasure Cruise (For Chikubu Island) ridden from Hikone Port

Mysterious islands float on magnificent Lake Biwa. Chikubu Island which is one of the eight views of Lake Biwa has long been cursed as the “island of God” and has been deeply worshipped by people. You can enjoy a mysterious trip on a sightseeing boat to visit Hōgonji and Tsukubusumu Shrine. A free shuttle bus runs from Hikone Station.

Hōgon-ji Temple

“Hōgonji” worships “Dai-Benzaiten”, god of fortune and is counted as one of Sanbenzaiten, a place full of power alongside “Enoshima Shrine” in Enoshima, Kanagawa and “Itsukushima Shrine” of Hiroshima. “Dai-Benzaiten” is a god that resuscitates talent and is said to bring improvements to one’s arts and crafts.

Tsukubusuma Shrine

“Tsukubusumu Shrine” is also known as “Chikubusumu Shrine” and worships four pillars of god. There is a gateway (tori-i) facing Lake Biwa and it is said that if you throw a disc-shaped earthenware dish known as the “Karawake” from a high place called Ryujin Uganjyu through the middle of the gateway, your wish will come true. The “Karawake” can be purchase from the shrine.

4Take a break at a cafe before boarding for the ship ride back.

KOKOYA

There is a cafe and stand called “Kokoya” near the pier. Take a short break here before boarding by eating light meals that use Omi Beef or drinking coffee and/or juice.

Kanponoyado

There is “Kanpo-no-yado Hikone” right in front of Hikone port, which is the arrival spot from Chikubu Island. On the 6th floor, there is a natural hot spring bath enclosed in glass where the panoramic view of Lake Biwa expands in front of you. It is known to be an effective way to recover from fatigue and muscle pain; why not heal from all of the exhaustion accumulated from traveling?

Champon-tei Sohonke

The Omi champon of “champon-tei Sohonke” is mild and plain with lots of vegetables, giving it a very nutritious and gentle soup and is the highlight of the ramen. Born in Hikone, kombu and dried bonito is used to make the soup stock along with homemade noodles and vegetables produced in Japan to complete the ramen, making it a masterpiece.

7At the end of your trip to Hikone City, experience Zazen at Mannenzan Chōshōin!

Chōshōin

Stay for a night at Hikone, and have an active start from the following day! Zazen is recommended for those who are interested in trying out an experience that cannot be experienced elsewhere.
Zazen is recognized as a spiritual training is done through sitting in good posture, cross-legged on a circular cushion in a state free from all thoughts and desires for spiritual unity. This is a training in which a monk instructs while Zazen takes place, and is an activity that should be tried out by those willing to take on a slightly unusual experience.
